What women love most?

If we read carefully “The Wife of Bath” by Chaucer, we can realize that our needs have not suffered so many changes at all. According to the prologue, the woman wanted to have being seen as a stronger woman. She claimed attitude, intelligence, voice, brave and so on. If we think about what women love most in these days, we can conclude on the same topics. Women want to have respect from men and society. Women want to have more spaces for ourselves. I want to be treated as a partner not as a domestic servant. Women love feeling loved when we are right or wrong.

We have to be understood as a person and not utilized as a sexual object, because one of us has an amazing body. Men must respect women’s independency and women’s freedom because all of us need them. However, some men forget that issue and they abuse, they don't respect human rights.

Forgetting clichés and gentlemanliness, because you are not more gentleman because you open me the car’s door. Women love to share with a gentleman in his inside and his outside. We want to be recognized by our woman’s worth.

What I understood from G. Chaucer's poem "Thruth"

Truth is an interesting poem that presentes us an opinion about the society in medieval times. I think the name of the poem is because the truth always appears and tells you when you were right or wrong. When he says truth, it means whatever you do the truth comes afterward.
Our present world is full of market, trades, money, consumerism, envy and selfishness. Hence, when I read "for greed entails hate and social climbing uncertainty" it inmediately makes sense to me. People are still trying to show who is the one with more power and with more goods.
Clearly, we can notice that religious implications are part of this poem. In my opinion, not saying what is right or what is wrong. Religious implications that I saw were just advices to be more human. Firstly with yourself and then with the rest.
As I said before, this poem makes sense to me because I unfurtanetely can see that through time issues based on consumerism are still present. Therefore, reading this Chaucer's poem lets me think that there are people who believe in change. There are people who criticize the system and do something for it, at least with their closer people.

My definition of an Epic Poem

According to my opinion an Epic Poem is very different form other kinds of them. Unquestinable, this kind of poems tell us very long stories about heroes and their exciting happenings. Its structure is different too, because its sentences begin with Capital Letters. However, these stories are fictional and not real. Eventhough, they make us think about what happened in the past and also let our minds fly.

People & Literature enrich us

" We are all formed from what other people give us: first our parents and then other people near us. Literature opens to the infinite this possibility of interaction and thus enriches us infinitely…” (page 17)
I totally agree with this quotation because our knowledge is firstly constructed by what other people say. We hear different opinions and different experiences. According to that we form our criteria. We create our first aproaches about life, history, politics, etc. In fact, our personal and external experiences give us knowledge about the world.
However, when we begin our formal education (school, high school, university) we beging to bring, erase and certify our thoughts and opinions. Why? because we read more, we talk to other people, we know different kind of opinions, not just opinions from our family. Thus, we begin to change some ideas and certify other ones. At the university thanks to our readings, and obviously between discussion with classmates and teachers, we try to reach a better understanding about world and we try to clarify aour thoughts.
In that sense, literature gives us another important tool to reach what we want to. As the quotation says "Literature opens to the infinitive this possibility of interaction" I think this is unquestionable. Throught reading and disscusion we can compare and being more critical. In this step of our life we can listen to people's stories such as when we were children or adolescents but now we compare and criticize because we are having a wider vision, thanks to literature. Therefore, people and literature enrich us but at the end, we decide which of them is more specific.

Depression, Mechanization and Modernization

Modern times is another masterpiece from Charles Chaplin. Mainly, It is about the depression of the 1930s. It shows a clear dissatisfaction with the lived situations . The main issue is how industrial situation increased, but people were extremely poor. How ironic, don’t you think?

At the beginning, we can see how the conditions of work inside the factories are. Men worked very hard without time for themselves. Charles Chaplin was a factory worker with a very fast work. In fact, he went mad by the monotony of his job. He had so many abuses, as every worker in the factory. Mechanization was the principal element in working conditions. People were seeing as machines. But, he could leave this job.

Meanwhile outside the factories, people were totally disappointment with the social and economic situations. Obviously, rich people didn’t have any problem, if I base my opinion in what I saw in the film. Mainly, the film reveals what poor people felt and how the police abused of power and authority. I can imagine easily their feelings, because today in XXI century we have lived the same.

Clearly, Charles Chaplin showed what he felt about the situations. Remember that the movie was directed by him. He always saw the problem with a different perspective.Issues were very well treated. We can see how industrialization and modernization converted people into automatons and objects. Pictures and scenes were concise. However, humour sometimes made to lose the attention. But, I know that it’s the main characteristic from Chaplin. This is the way chosen by him to express what he felt. You should watch the film, because it’s thought provoking. Perhaps you won’t cry and most of the times you will laugh, however you will see the main issues lived in industrial times but in a different way. Was it modernization? Interesting, don’t you think?

Language and Teaching
Industrialization

How can we relate language teaching with industrialization? Was it the beginnig of now? Industrialization was a period of time at the end of the XVIII and the early XIX century. This period had lot of changes but mainly based on social and economic changes which were closely related with technological innovation. Industrialization was also a very important period for philosophers, literature and education.

Agriculture, transportation, communication and technology suffered the principal changes. Industrial and technological innovations came for helping and increasing agricultural work. Roadway was a step forward in this field. Factories were needing people to work, but working conditions were very poor. They were treated as machines and long hours were spent in their jobs. In fact, in this new period, women and children had to work in the same way as men.

Population increased because people came from the countryside to look for new jobs. According to the history of English education "Child labour was common practice in this period and working-class families were very reluctant to give up the earnings of their children for the benefit of education"(www.know-Britain.com, 2008) . Hence, factories were plenty of illiterate people and employers thought about that. However, there were not changes in legislation for employees and there were sectarian problems in educational developments. For this reason, reformers began to protest against these poor conditions. Reformers asked for better conditions and no abuse. Children couldn’t work, they had to go to schools and receive education. So, educational Parliament Acts allowed for school developments and state involvement.

According to European Industrialization (2008) In the middle of protests and dissatisfaction some industrial employers tended to insist on some schooling for their employers, because they didn’t want to have illiterate people working with them. After lot of protest asking for education and better conditions, in 1880 England impose school compulsory for everybody or at least every child. (www.faqts.org, 2008)

At the beginning, headmasters had to be from the Church of England. Furthermore, children had to learn the catechism and go to the liturgical celebrations. The government didn’t legislate this education, probably because they didn’t want to have more reformers. It is obvious, if people were educated and with their own opinion, they could protest with stronger arguments as philosophers and humanists did. Thus, government wanted to have silent people who couldn’t revolutionize, again, as philosopher did.

In this process of changes, education and child labor legislation began to change. However, according to European Industrialization, (2008) there were too few teachers and school buildings available to have any chance of success (www.faqts.org, 2008) Obviously, changes were not fast issues, but al least illiteracy began to disappear and at last, children had other types of working conditions, such as part time jobs. What have you seen these times? Unfortunatelly, while education is almost accessible for everybody, we still see children labour. we can not allow this issue.

As our principal objective with this essay is try to relate education and language teaching with what happened before. I can say that, it is very important for us knowing these processes of changes, because we can understand in a better way why we have this educational system. Our profession is very important for reformers, for philosopher and people in general, because we are the ones who can teach how to be more autonomous and with a critical thinking. We are the ones who can promote open minded people. We can not accept injustice. We can not permit poor conditions in education, because education is a right for all of us.

In short, As teachers we have to avoid illiteracy, our mission here is teaching and learning from other people. Illiteracy is our worst friend. In fact, it is not part of our job, even though we have to fight against it. Therefore, we have to win this fight; we have to win against illiteracy and uneducated people. Throughout language, we can promote critical thinking, values and how to express. Even English, Spanish, French or Portuguese every language is our principal skill. If we don’t promote language, Why are we language teachers? Our language is our first skill to express and show what we are thinking about. Education can not be denied by anybody and for anybody. It must be excellent, because our students and people in general deserve this priority. We are the ones who must achieve these thoughts for students, obviously we have to teach them how to give and express their opinions and reasons in an appropriate way not just by saying something with no foundation. In this sense, What is better than language? Our students can be the new reformers asking for a better education as industrial reformers did and as some students did years ago in Chile (revolución pingüina) because education needs more.

ALL OF THEM NEED EDUCATION. DON'T YOU THINK?

Love, conflicts and I, your Queen

Elizabeth, The Golden Age was a movie based on Elizabeth I’s reign. The movie shows an intimate image about the England queen. However, the main issue is the political and religious conflict between England and Spain.

In one side, Elizabeth was a protestant queen with a strong personality. In another side, Mary Stuart, queen of Scot, and Philip II, king of Spain, were Catholics. Most of the citizen in England was catholic too, thus Elizabeth had to face up to the opponents in her kingdom. Hence, I imagine the difficult period to her, but at the same time I’m thinking about her huge strength. Philip II wanted to impose catholic believes around England and other European countries, but he was waiting for a concrete reason to fight.

Mary Stuart and Philip II want to depose Elizabeth. A holy war was the name given for the conflicts present, in where England was against. The intelligence showed by England was a key to find the enemies and Elizabeth ordered the execution of Mary Stuart. This issue was what Phillip was waiting for. An official war was declared, Spain and England had to fight and the winner will impose her/his believes.

The movie shows a well developed Elizabeth character (Cate Blanchett). But, I think that Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush) needed more emphasis, because he is an important character inside the England history and inside the movie. In my opinion, the picture of the movie was excellent, the landscapes and the palaces were very well achieved. However, the movie doesn’t have a concrete intention. If I have to categorize the movie, I won’t be able to do it because I don’t know if it is a historical or romantic movie. However, it is a though provoking movie, because you think about history and also love, a woman with lot of power but without a couple. Why? Is today the same?
