Depression, Mechanization and Modernization

Modern times is another masterpiece from Charles Chaplin. Mainly, It is about the depression of the 1930s. It shows a clear dissatisfaction with the lived situations . The main issue is how industrial situation increased, but people were extremely poor. How ironic, don’t you think?

At the beginning, we can see how the conditions of work inside the factories are. Men worked very hard without time for themselves. Charles Chaplin was a factory worker with a very fast work. In fact, he went mad by the monotony of his job. He had so many abuses, as every worker in the factory. Mechanization was the principal element in working conditions. People were seeing as machines. But, he could leave this job.

Meanwhile outside the factories, people were totally disappointment with the social and economic situations. Obviously, rich people didn’t have any problem, if I base my opinion in what I saw in the film. Mainly, the film reveals what poor people felt and how the police abused of power and authority. I can imagine easily their feelings, because today in XXI century we have lived the same.

Clearly, Charles Chaplin showed what he felt about the situations. Remember that the movie was directed by him. He always saw the problem with a different perspective.Issues were very well treated. We can see how industrialization and modernization converted people into automatons and objects. Pictures and scenes were concise. However, humour sometimes made to lose the attention. But, I know that it’s the main characteristic from Chaplin. This is the way chosen by him to express what he felt. You should watch the film, because it’s thought provoking. Perhaps you won’t cry and most of the times you will laugh, however you will see the main issues lived in industrial times but in a different way. Was it modernization? Interesting, don’t you think?
