Love, conflicts and I, your Queen

Elizabeth, The Golden Age was a movie based on Elizabeth I’s reign. The movie shows an intimate image about the England queen. However, the main issue is the political and religious conflict between England and Spain.

In one side, Elizabeth was a protestant queen with a strong personality. In another side, Mary Stuart, queen of Scot, and Philip II, king of Spain, were Catholics. Most of the citizen in England was catholic too, thus Elizabeth had to face up to the opponents in her kingdom. Hence, I imagine the difficult period to her, but at the same time I’m thinking about her huge strength. Philip II wanted to impose catholic believes around England and other European countries, but he was waiting for a concrete reason to fight.

Mary Stuart and Philip II want to depose Elizabeth. A holy war was the name given for the conflicts present, in where England was against. The intelligence showed by England was a key to find the enemies and Elizabeth ordered the execution of Mary Stuart. This issue was what Phillip was waiting for. An official war was declared, Spain and England had to fight and the winner will impose her/his believes.

The movie shows a well developed Elizabeth character (Cate Blanchett). But, I think that Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush) needed more emphasis, because he is an important character inside the England history and inside the movie. In my opinion, the picture of the movie was excellent, the landscapes and the palaces were very well achieved. However, the movie doesn’t have a concrete intention. If I have to categorize the movie, I won’t be able to do it because I don’t know if it is a historical or romantic movie. However, it is a though provoking movie, because you think about history and also love, a woman with lot of power but without a couple. Why? Is today the same?
